The journalism program prepares the student to acquire proficiency in traditional and electronic news gathering techniques and in analyzing and evaluating information. The student will be able to write a variety of publishable stories for electronic and print journalism and to apply principles of editing and publication design. Competencies will be assessed regularly by performance in the college newspaper’s print and web editions and its magazine, as well as by participation in state and national competitions. The major prepares the student to transfer and major in journalism, mass communications, public relations or advertising and provides career opportunities in electronic journalism and in newspaper, magazine, advertising, public relations, and radio/television work.

At least 15 units required for the major must be completed at El Camino College.

*Note: one semester each of JOUR 7ab , JOUR 9abcd , JOUR 11abcd , JOUR 14abcd , and PHOT 206ab  may be counted for the major.

Note: JOUR 6  is the same course as PHOT 106 . Course credit is limited to JOUR 6  or PHOT 106 .
