It’s an accessible, affordable path to a rewarding, in-demand career. Our Sign Language/Interpreter Training Associate of Arts (AA) degree typically takes up to two years. Prerequisites/Co-requisites:
SLAN 111 - American Sign Language I
This beginning course, taught within the context of deaf culture, introduces students to signing and comprehending elementary American Sign Language (ASL). Through a visual-gestural approach and multimedia activities, students develop basic vocabulary and grammar that deal with everyday topics.
In Spring of 2024, this course will also be offered as a non-credit course to students who do not pass the initial for credit SLAN 111 Class, or to non-interpreting major students interested in learning American Sign Language, or to students who had taken the SLAN-111 class prior, passed the class, but it was several semesters/years ago, and they would like a refresher before moving on in the next sequence of courses.
Note: This course is comparable to one year of high school sign language.
(Formerly Sign Language/Interpreter Training 15)
SLAN 112 - American Sign Language II
This course is a continuation of the study of American Sign Language (ASL) and deaf culture. Focusing on ASL structure and grammar used by native signers, students will develop fluency at the intermediate level.
In Spring of 2024, this course will also be offered as a non-credit course to students who do not pass the initial for credit SLAN 112 Class, or to non-interpreting major students interested in learning American Sign Language, or to students who had taken the SLAN-112 class prior, passed the class, but it was several semesters/years ago, and they would like a refresher before moving on in the next sequence of courses.
Note: The prerequisite for this course is comparable to one year of high school sign language.

English 1A - It is mandatory to pass this course before registering for ASL 113
SLAN-113/English 1-A Corequisite. English 1-A can be taken as a corequisite with SLAN-113. Students must possess critical thinking skills in English to be able to interpret clearly, and succinctly for a Deaf individual. Students must pass English 1-A with a C or better before moving on to SLAN-114, and taking the Interpreting Level Courses.
