This is a general introduction to linguistics, the scientific study of human language. Emphasis is placed on the in-depth study of the structural components and mechanics of meaning in the world’s languages: morphology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics. These subfields are areas of active research in their own right, and are also foundational for working in other areas of linguistics introduced in this survey course, such as sociolinguistics, dialectology, historical linguistics, applied linguistics, sign language studies, psycholinguistics, and language acquisition.
