LING 1B - Linguistics 1B: Morphology, Semantics, Syntax, and Pragmatics 3 units 3 hours lecture Prerequisite: ENGL 1 or eligibility for ENGL 1A or qualification by appropriate assessment Credit, degree applicable Transfer CSU, UC
This is a general introduction to linguistics, the scientific study of human language. Emphasis is placed on the in-depth study of the structural components and mechanics of meaning in the world’s languages: morphology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics. These subfields are areas of active research in their own right, and are also foundational for working in other areas of linguistics introduced in this survey course, such as sociolinguistics, dialectology, historical linguistics, applied linguistics, sign language studies, psycholinguistics, and language acquisition.
