LING 1B - Linguistics 1B: Morphology, Semantics, Syntax, and Pragmatics 3 units 3 hours lecture Recommended Preparation: Eligibility for English 1A Credit, degree applicable Transfer CSU, UC
This is an introductory course that explores the fundamental principles and theories of linguistics, the study of human language, and its properties and characteristics. Emphasis is placed on an in-depth study of the structural components and mechanics of meaning in the world’s languages: morphology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics. These subfields are areas of active research in their own right, and are also foundational for working in other areas of linguistics introduced in this survey course, such as sociolinguistics, dialectology, historical linguistics, and other fields that include aspects of cross-cultural communication.
