By completing the degree requirements, the student will acquire proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding Spanish and will gain knowledge of Spanish and Spanish-American culture. The student will be able to communicate in Spanish, write formal compositions, and read the texts of Spanish and Spanish-American authors, all at the Intermediate-Mid level of competency. Competencies will be assessed throughout the language sequence with written and oral exams. This major provides career opportunities where knowledge of Spanish is useful and prepares students for continued advanced learning of Spanish.
The student who has completed two or more years of Spanish in high school will have the opportunity to enroll with advanced standing and to complete semesters 5 and/or 6 at El Camino College. It is recommended that language majors enroll in conversation classes.
At least 50 percent of the courses required for the Spanish major must be completed at El Camino College. Spanish 4 must be completed at El Camino College.
